MantisÂ
Nature inspired Design . 3D Exploration
My Role :Â
Product Designer
Duration :Â
4 weeks
Goal :Â
The goal of the project is to derive innovative design ideas and solutions by studying how nature addresses design challenges through animal and plant adaptations. By exploring and incorporating specific features of various species, this project aims to create form designs that are inspired by nature's ingenuity.
Tools :Â
Fusion 360, Keyshot
Solution :Â
The solution involves creating designs inspired by the stunning colors, size, and unique markings of the mantis, incorporating its beautiful white with green, red, black, and blue patterns, as well as its distinctive display behavior and back shield.
Overview
Nature-inspired design generates ideas and solutions by observing how nature addresses design challenges through animal and plant adaptations. This involves basic form exploration, considering specific features of various animals or species.
Inspiration : Devil's Flower Mantis
It’s amazing colors and size make it the most stunning mantis there is. It’s big and when adult has beautiful white with green markings, a big shield on its back and an amazing display behaviour showing red, white, black and blue markings.

Process & Form Exploration
The task was to select a distinctive feature of a species that serves as inspiration. I found the face structure of the mantis particularly inspiring.

Key Learning & Conclusion
The learning curve for my "Nature Inspired Form" project involved understanding how to draw design inspiration from nature's solutions to challenges, studying animal and plant adaptations, and translating these natural features into innovative design concepts and forms. Through this process, I developed skills in observation, abstraction, and applying biomimicry principles to create functional and aesthetically pleasing designs.
